The B1/B2 visa is the US visitor visa for tourism, family visits and short business trips. It is one of the most common visas our Bharuch and Vadodara offices help with, especially for parents visiting children in the USA.
Step 1: Fill the DS-160 form
The DS-160 is the online nonimmigrant visa application. Answer every question honestly and keep details consistent with your documents. Save the confirmation page with its barcode.
Step 2: Pay the fee and create your appointment profile
Pay the visa application fee through the official appointment system and book two appointments: biometrics at a visa application centre and an interview at a US consulate. Waiting times change often, so book as early as possible.
Step 3: Biometrics
At the visa application centre, your fingerprints and photo are taken. Carry your passport, DS-160 confirmation and appointment letter.
Step 4: The interview
The consular officer asks short questions about your trip, finances and ties to India. Answer clearly in your own words. The officer decides mainly on your answers and DS-160, though supporting documents help when asked.
- What is the purpose of your trip?
- Who will you stay with in the USA?
- How long will you stay?
- What do you do in India?
- Who is paying for your trip?
Documents to carry
Carry your passport, old passports, DS-160 confirmation, appointment letter, photo, bank statements, income tax returns, employment or business proof, and an invitation letter if visiting family. Keep them organised so you can show what is asked.
After the interview
If approved, your passport is kept for visa stamping and returned through the courier service. If refused, you receive a letter explaining the section of law, and you can reapply when your circumstances or application improve.
Be honest, be brief and be consistent. The interview is short, so every clear answer counts.
Preparing your answers
You do not need to memorise answers, but you should be clear about your trip. Know the cities you will visit, where you will stay, how long you will be away and why you will return. If you are visiting family, know their address, their status in the USA and what they do. Simple, confident answers are better than long speeches.
Showing ties to India
Officers want to see that you will return after your visit. Strong ties include a stable job or business, property, family responsibilities, ongoing studies or a history of previous international travel and return. Carry documents that support these ties in case the officer asks.
Dressing and behaviour on the day
Dress neatly, arrive on time and follow the queue instructions at the consulate. Electronic devices and bags are usually not allowed inside, so carry only your documents in a clear folder. Speak clearly and wait for the officer to finish each question before answering.
Senior citizens and parents
Many parents from Gujarat travel to see children studying or working in the USA. Interview waivers may be available in some renewal cases, and staff can help senior citizens with language and queues. Our team prepares parents with a clear list of documents and practice questions.
