One visa for most of Europe, prepared the right way

9 October 2026 By Aapka Holidays

A Schengen visa allows you to travel across most European countries in the Schengen area on a single visa. It is the visa most Indian travellers need for a Europe tour covering France, Switzerland, Italy, Germany or the Netherlands.

Which country should you apply to?

Apply to the country where you will spend the most nights. If your nights are equal between countries, apply to the country you enter first. Applying to the wrong country is a common reason for refusal.

When should you apply?

You can usually apply up to six months before travel, and it is wise to apply at least four to eight weeks ahead. Appointment slots fill quickly in the summer season, so book early.

Documents usually required

  • Passport valid for at least three months after leaving Europe, with blank pages
  • Completed application form and recent photographs
  • Flight itinerary and confirmed hotel bookings
  • Travel insurance with at least 30,000 euros of medical cover
  • Bank statements, income tax returns and salary slips or business proof
  • Cover letter explaining your trip and day wise itinerary

Biometrics and appointment

Applications are submitted at the visa application centre, with fingerprints and a photo taken. Many applicants from Gujarat use the visa centre in Ahmedabad, while some countries may need a visit to Mumbai.

Understand the 90/180 rule

A Schengen visa allows a stay of up to 90 days within any 180 day period. Plan your dates within the period granted on your visa sticker.

Tips for a stronger application

Keep your itinerary consistent across bookings, show a stable financial history, explain the source of large deposits, and include proof of ties to India such as employment, business or property. Avoid booking non refundable tickets before the visa is approved.

A neat, consistent file with clear finances does more for a Schengen visa than any extra document.

Writing a good cover letter

A short cover letter explains who you are, why you are travelling, which countries you will visit, your dates and who is paying for the trip. Mention your job or business, your leave approval and your plan to return to India. Keep it to one page and make sure it matches your itinerary and bookings exactly.

Showing your finances

Most applicants submit bank statements for the last three to six months, income tax returns for recent years and salary slips or business documents. Embassies look for a regular financial pattern rather than one large balance. If a relative is sponsoring you, include their documents and a sponsorship letter.

Families and children

Each family member needs a separate application, and children usually need a birth certificate and a consent letter from parents if one parent is not travelling. Applying together as a family with a common itinerary keeps the files consistent.

After you receive the visa

Check the visa sticker carefully for your name, passport number, dates, number of entries and the number of days allowed. Report any error to the visa centre immediately, before you travel.
