Summer holidays (April to June)

Head to the mountains. Himachal Pradesh, Kashmir, Ladakh and Uttarakhand offer cool weather when the plains are hot.

Monsoon (July to September)

Ladakh is ideal as it lies in a rain shadow. Kerala is lush and good for Ayurvedic treatments, and Udaipur and Mount Abu look their greenest. Avoid mountain road trips in heavy rain.

Diwali and winter (October to February)

Beaches and heritage come alive. Goa, Kerala, Rajasthan, Agra and the Andaman Islands are at their best.

Pilgrimage seasons

The Char Dham Yatra runs from about May to October, while South India temple tours are comfortable from October to March.

  • Book peak season trips two to three months ahead
  • Check road and weather updates for mountain trips
  • Consider off season travel for lower prices
  • Keep a buffer day in monsoon and winter travel

The same destination can feel completely different in a different month. Choose the season first, then the place.

Long weekends and short breaks

For long weekends, choose destinations close to Gujarat such as Udaipur, Mount Abu, Ujjain, Indore, Goa or Mumbai, or take a short flight to Kerala or Rajasthan. Shorter travel time leaves more time to enjoy the destination.

Festival travel

Diwali, Christmas and New Year are the busiest travel periods in India. Flights and hotels fill fast and prices rise, so book two to three months ahead. Consider travelling a few days before or after the peak dates for better rates.

Off season advantages

Travelling in the off season can bring lower prices and fewer crowds. Kerala in the monsoon, Goa just after the rains, or Rajasthan in early autumn can be rewarding if you accept some weather uncertainty.

International options by season

  • November to March: Dubai, Thailand, Sri Lanka, Maldives
  • April to June: Europe, Bali, Singapore and Malaysia
  • July and August: Europe summer, Kenya safari, Bali dry season
  • September to October: Europe autumn, Hong Kong, Malaysia
